Well, if we say that Marunada is the biggest Lovran's event, Carnival is certainly the second. Traditional international manifestation during January and February brings many events and entertainment; Ceremony of Carnival openning, Carnival Balls, Children's Carnival, Carnival Parade, and finally, the main event, traditional closing of Carnival with authentic "immolation of Pust".
Carnival (Maskare) are one of the oldiest customs which survives in Croatia. The main purpose of Carnival is believe that on such way the evil will be discouraged, winter would be stopped and spring and happines would come. Fantastic masks which playing, singing, making noise and going all around the Lovran area, brings happines and signs of spring in every house they visit.
The oldiest masks ware Zvoncari, for sure. Impressive "dancers" dressed in sheepskins with ram's horns. Their traditions goes deep in 19. century. Its teriffying look best describes venerable wish of people to beat evil ghosts and deamons. The big noise they produce by shaking the big bells on their close, have exactyly that purpose, to freighten and scare evil forces. There are several Zvoncar groups, but the most well-known are Halubajski Zvoncari.
The another traditional custom of Lovran and wide area of Lovran is immolation of Pust. Pust is doll, symbolic person, representing a main villain of all troubles of past year. At the end of Carnival (Pepelnica), Pust would be judged, convicted to be immolated as guilty for all troubles and unhappinnes of past year. This event assigns the end of current year Carnival and beginning of happiness and better time for all people.
Finally some words about Rijeka Carnival, the 3rd biggest Carnival in the world (after Rio's and Venice Carnivals). One of the biggest and most typical of European carnivals is the Rijeka Carnival, with its thousand of masked individuals, groups and allegorical floats with over 120,000 spectators.
